The Bretterbude in Heiligenhafen is the winner of the Hotel Property Award 2017

11 Oct 2017

This year's winner of the Hotel Property Award 2017 is the Bretterbude in Heiligenhafen on the Baltic coast. The prize was awarded at the hotelforum's gala evening on 6 October.

Andreas Martin
, Managing Partner of hotelforum management GmbH: "The Bretterbude is a shack in the positive sense of the word: there is wood everywhere, whether we're talking about the façade, which is made of different types of wood, the individually-designed guest rooms, or the "Kneading Room" massage salon and the surfboard rental shop. It's rough, but it's also cordial, in keeping with the language and nature of the Baltic coast. The Bretterbude convinced the hotelforum jury both with this harmonious overall approach which appeals to all age groups, and with its prime coastal location".

The architectural concept of this newly-constructed hotel is reminiscent of lobster huts on Helgoland, and it gives the optical impression of being divided into smaller individual buildings. Because the building has been integrated into the existing dike, it is only three storeys high on the seaward side facing north, but it has four floors towards the South. The entire building was faced with four different types of real wood which age at different rates, thus ensuring that the façade will look natural.

The interior is predominantly purist and industrial. All the halls and the public areas have only been covered with rough plaster. The industrial impression has been relaxed in the rooms, known in the Bretterbude as "Butzen", by using a lot of wood. Most of the elements are special structures and have been made to order. The furnishings made out of leather and steel incorporate such refinements as barstools made out of old bicycle saddles or seating made out of europalets.

Martin: "The Bretterbude speaks its own language in the truest sense of the word. You can book a "basic class" (Holzklasse) room, or you can enjoy a large room with a seaview, along with a free-standing bathtub!"

The Bretterbude has the "Strandschuppen" beach hut restaurant with 149 places inside and 80 outside, a "Spelunke" (reincarnation of an old harbour tavern), two conference rooms ("Renate and Hans Hinnerk"), as well as a spa area housing a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, an outside area and three "kneading rooms".

Because of the large number of applications, as well as their diversity and quality, this year's 17-member interdisciplinary jury selected 12 nominees from six countries from among the 50 hotel applicants coming from 12 European countries. Three finalists were then shortlisted from among these 12 nominees:

Bretterbude, Heiligenhafen

Motel One Berlin-Upper West

Roomers, Baden-Baden

Martin addressing the finalists: "Once more there was intensive discussion among the jurists in the run-up to the selection of the three finalists. The Bretterbude occupies an exclusive coastal location, so that it appeals to all generations of guests, and to a variety of travel budgets too. With the Upper West, Motel One has once again managed to occupy an exclusive inner city location which other hotel chains had also intensively endeavoured to open up in higher hotel segments. At the same time, the hotel concept has also been visibly developed when it comes to room design and public areas. Finally, the Roomers in Baden-Baden, furnished as it is with a highly-stylish Italian touch, is the perfect addition to the Baden-Baden hotel landscape in a previously unoccupied location directly opposite the town's festival hall, which by the way is the largest in Germany!"

The prospect of receiving the award appealed both to hotel developers as well as to owners and operators. Applications for the "Hotel Property Award" were received from hotels which were opened between January 2016 and June 2017 and which stand out from their competitors through a successful overall approach consisting of architecture, design and innovation. hotelforum regards a successful and homogeneous combination of the individual aspects to form a winning, economically-successful hotel concept as crucial.
